The Tern Verge X30 looks like it could be a whole lot of fun.

A (sort of) successor to my Dahon Speed Pro TT- same designers, different firm. Yes indeed, lots of fun.

I have a Tern Link D8 with a rear rack and mudguards, it's good for short rides up to 12-15km, but I'd not want to ride one for 30km in a hurry.

It comes with a 12-32 cassette, and I find it needs the low gears, climbing hills on it is remarkably hard even with it's light weight and little wheels, hills that I can climb on a road bike at 26km/h will have me crawling at 7km/h in low gear on the folding bike, however it's an easy ride on smooth/flat roads, and I never run out of gears.

I use the rear rack occasionally for shopping trips, something I would never do with the road bike.

Why do the brompons hold there value so well? Are the others so far behind in form and function?
Also for central London, how many gears would I need? It won't be doing epic miles.
More a case of a 5 mile ride to the station, and then within London. My job requires me to visit 2 or 3 customers in a day (west end, city & docklands)
Is it possible to hire a brompton for a week to try a week of commuting

The one that was linked in the video obv.
X30h is available for £1500. Quite easy to spend a lot more than half that on a Brompton, let alone one with an equivalent gear range.

Picked up my Tern Link D8 today and it seems v good value for money. Off to London tomorrow far a tour around will let you know how it goes

I used to ride with a man who had a Dahon. Swapped bikes once for a metric century (100km) and it was better than the bike I was using at the time.

I've considered going over to a folder, looked at the Dahons and Bromptons. If I ever do I'll get a Dahon rather than a Brompton. There was at the time I looked a well specified Ridgeback badged Dahon too.

I think my decathlon hoptown is made by Dahon. It's a fab bike and I've had a lot of use from it, but it's quite heavy and difficult to manage when it's folded.
I'd like a brompton as it folds smaller so easier to sneak by your feet on the train etc.

I keep looking at the birdy and dahon's but every review and blog I read comes down to the same 2 points
1. Brompton have honed their product over many many years with little change to the fold as it is well designed
2. A folded brompton still is the smallest you will find today

My c2w isn't open just yet

How did you get on with your folder?
Had a brisk 5 miles last night and found it to be great fun. Managed 12 mph average which is only a couple of mph slower than I would have expected on my hybrid. Plenty of gears for a loop with a 3% climb. Learning points were more care needed to avoid potholes due to the wheel size and the need to be aware of the increased rate of response (you can really chuck it about).

So really happy with the bike, it's not a Brompton when it comes to folding and weight but it was only half the price. Thoroughly recommended.
