A bit of wisdom handed down to me was: Draw a little arrow on the tube indicating direction of rotation. Always line the manufacturer's name on the tyre up with the valve. Then, when you locate the hole in the tube you know exactly where to look for the sharp in the tyre.

Indeed, I missed that, sorry.

But you didn't mention the directional arrow on the tube (done with the wax crayon from the repair kit ... do they still have them?) Also it has to be the manufacturer's name, not some other stuff like the tyre type or size, or you may get confused with all the stuff on the tyre.

Touché on the tube part. I will use that one. I am just careful when removing the tube, but why worry when the arrow is there.

OT but I was given this advice by a grumpy Welshman who trued my wheel in the 70s. He let me know that my tyres were rubbish and on wrong, my tubes were wrong, my wheel fit only for scrap and an insult to his jig. I think there was more ... I don't think I made a good impression.

Yeah, this is why I'm truing one of my wheels myself badly. I think the bike it's on would fail the laugh test at most bike shops. :-)

Many thanks again for all this stuff. Never too old to learn (I knew next to nowt anyway). And in the spirit of sharing info, just discovered that this:

Using number 11 (that's something else I don't understand - why the bigger numbers are smaller wrenches) fits that core on the Prestas, so now I've tightened it prop'ly without havin' to spend on another tool.
AND, yes, the tyre's still holding up.
Thanks again and ... really like that tip about direction of rotation of the tube. Already knew about valve on tyre manufacturer's name.
You're all bl**dy stars for your willingness to share with a plonker like me

@Geoff Crowther Do the markings refer to the opposite side of the tool so that you can see it easier when actually using it? So the 11mm marking is in reference to the gap nearest the camera?

D'ya know, I really can't answer that cos I can't see how they're measured. Def not mills. And anyway, there are two 15s opposite each other, likewise 14s, and they are both smaller gaps than say 10 or 11.
Maybe someone wiser than you 'n' me knows.
B*gger ... won't be able to sleep tonight, worryin' about this .
