Cycling n00b here. Does that actually work? I'd never heard of flint catchers or the like before. Should they be in contact with the tyre or "just" off the surface

They were usually fitted just off the surface. The better ones followed the curvature of the tyre rather than a straight piece of tape. Used them for years. Seemed to protect my tubs quite well in my estimation. Punctures on tubular tyres were always a nightmare to fix.

If anybody is into 3d printing, there must surely be an opening in the market here. Print a lightweight flint catcher with a curved "blade" that follows tyre profile. Stick it to the bike with double sided tape.

Custom print in different colours, to match the bike.
