Was thinking today about flat roads and how hills can vary the mental effort, even though hills can sap you.

you're absolutely right. A flat, straight road into a headwind is a fearsome thing. It saps the mind.

No kidding!!

Used to do 25s down past Ashford that had a long straight past Dungeness - long, flat road (always into a headwind ;)) with horrible great big expansion joints in it - it was a real killer.

Love hills and there's none where I live now. A challenging headwind is a nasty and excellent thing. I'll always go for hills because I'm the kind of idiot who thinks it means I've worked harder and it counts for more than an alternative hard flat ride. I grew up in a hilly area and am just a bit silly like that.

;)

Last yr I recall doing a ride and and in particular a road: it was 'generally' straight, there was a slight headwind too, was warmish but DULL...I stopped off at a service station for a snack...it was good for the rest...mentally.

Funny how you recall those times aint it - when its just you and relatively little or no one else around...

I love hills too. Yep they hurt but they're so much more interesting. This May, we had two days following the Innradweg, flatly along the river Inn. YAWN!!! I got very excited when we veered of into the hills! The views were worth all the effort.

I hate straight roads too. It's all about bends.

As long as I'm not cycling into a strong wind then I love the flats!

Going up hill you are putting some energy in the bank for later.
With a head wind you are just using it up for nothing.

When I started cycling a couple of years ago I hated hills as they were such an effort to get up. Now my fave ride includes the biggest and steepest hill I can find in the area. I just love getting to the top! I get a free ride down the less steep but long down side of about a mile.

As a sign of getting well obsessed with my cycling, I plan routes to include the biggest hills I can... I also get a thrill of challenge when I see long straight stretching out in front

There are a lot of hills around were I live but only a few of them are seriously steep. When I started cycling again after a lengthy break, I found them hard going, now they don't bother me at all. A long straight, flat road can be boring, even more so when a headwind is involved. The roads here are so poorly surfaced that I find the most annoying thing off all is having to always be on the lookout for potholes.
