Hi everyone,

I have a fixie that I bought last week but the crankset on it is cheap and I feel it's too small. It's is 44t so it needs to be bigger than that, I'm not sure how big the jump actually is between sizes.

My budget is absolute max. £100, but I would much prefer to be in the £50-£60 ball park. It also has to be black!! (matte preferred)

It would be cheaper and easier to change the rear sprocket for a higher gear. What make is the crankset, as it may be possible to change just the ring?

Nothing wrong with a 44 chainring. If coupled to a 17 rear sprocket will give you about a 68" gear which is a classic ratio for this time of year. This is the combination that I ride on mine. If you do want to upgrade the front ring - have a look at velosolo.

Any higher than about a 72" gear (48*18) may give you problems on any significant hills.

Like the previous post says - it is much easier to change the rear sprockets and much cheaper as well. Over time I have built up quite a collection of fixed sprockets from 22 up to 13.

But fixed gear is fun and can be more rewarding than gears, so enjoy

Ah okay thanks guys, it's a 16 rear sprocket. Just feels like I'm pedalling too quick and not going that fast!

The crankset is made by chasewood.

Riding fixed or single speed helps you widen your cadence range. You have to be able to cope with riding up steep hills at about 4 mph and taking descents at speeds approaching 30mph. Some will claim even faster speeds. A 44 * 16 should see you riding at speeds up to 22-25 mph on the flats. As you are new to fixie riding, try and seek out some significant hills and try with your current set up.

Cheers Keith
