JUst been out on my first road bike today (specialized dolce). I loved it.

What a difference. Last week did 50 miles last week on my trusty hybrid with others on road bikes. I struggled up every hill and felt thoroughly demorolised.

This week I did 41 miles and the hills were no problem, but didn't start off with a mountainous one like last week. Even so, I didn't even have to drop into the lower gears and even used the drop handlebars on some descents!! Felt like a real professional!!

Wish I had only done it sooner.

Last weeks group were a bit faster but i still feel like the bike has made a difference on the uphills I didn't feel like i was pedalling forever and getting nowhere. With my hybrid I had to change down into my lowest gear and pedal like mad and was still left standing by them. They did wait for me at the top of the hills though.

I love going out with a group though. I go much further and feel much safer.

I rode my 1st road bike other day, also specialized dolce and oh my god so much more fast and fun! Just hope my MTB isn't too sad while she's left in the garage!

There's a reason why TDF riders ride road racing bikes, but people seem to find it hard to believe...

Welcome to cycling!

Maybe you could convince my wife. In here world, my bike has two wheels gears etc. So how can a road bike make such a difference.

Road bikes are designed to be light, fast, aerodynamic, free-rolling and efficient users of the human body. That means compared to all other bikes they feel so much faster, livlier and easier to propel. The downsides are that they might be deemed uncomfortable and unforgiving and inflexible in their use. But for outright velocity and fun, road-bikes are the dogs.

I'm with you 100% it's the wife that thinks it's just another toy I'm after.

I'm the first in the family to get a road bike. The others are just getting into their cycling and seem to want mountain bikes. I want to scream at them, NO, get a road bike.

I do want a new mountain bike as well, but they just don't know what they're missing!!

I have been mountain biking for 21 years and always scoffed at roadies but last summer I got fed up with the constant mud and filth and started road riding. I have been getting steadly fitter since then. I now only use the MTB for the occasional trip out and when I do I'm considerably faster; how I wish I'd started road riding 21 years ago, I'd have done much better at the off-road events like Polaris that I've undertaken.

In February I acquired a carbon racer and my cycling life took on a new dimension; now I fly up most hills as if they aren't there and riding fast on the road is easy and a real pleasure. I'm looking forward to doing my first 100-miler this Sunday, weather permitting. Did the 60 mile Manchester-Blackpool recently and didn't find it too much of a problem.

I'm 53, by the way.
