41 down a large hill near the end of my ride. There is a corner at the bottom but I refuse to brake:biggrin:.

I did that today on a hill, though I was only going 25MPH. I almost crashed into the pavement, just got right again just in time, was almost touching the kerb!

Ah racebike, for a scary moment I thought you might be one of these people who can do 15mph on a hybrid. I had a good level of fitness before I started cycling, I was a better runner than I am a cyclist. 15mph is still very good for a beginner , that's my lifetime speed goal.

I know this is going to sound like a silly question, but what do the terms "hybrid" etc mean?

Hybrid is a vague term that covers a dozen sort of bikes between full on MTB and race bike. Mine is a city bike, a frame lighter than a MTB, 700x37 tyres, flat bars, very high up seating geometry relative to MTBs & race bikes and not very aerodynamic. My race bike appears to be about 3-7mph quicker under identical conditions.

Anyway I'm sure randochap or hilldodger or someone will go into much more detail if you were interested. We've had threads on it before with a fair bit of technical knowledge.

Anyway not to bad i dont think, once i get my SPD pedals i hope that improves my cycling too.

Stilletoes wont be compatible with your new pedals. You will need to trade in style for practicality

Keep up the good work,

Thanks. Is this a hybrid?: http://www.toysrus.co.uk/Toys-R-Us/.../Mens/26-Kinetic-Full-Suspension-Bike(0013822) Just curious as it's the bike I've got (and it's not gone down to half price, it's gone up as I paid just under £90 at the end of December for it).

That's down the String Road in Arran, my first time down was 43mph something and second time round it was 47.6mph in perfect conditions. Its pretty steep but even with my nervous descending its still easy to gain speed; I'm sure other folk with more nerve could go faster ;).

thought i read Goatfell...Planning a trip to Arran sometime this summer -test my bravery:smile:

I went down a hill and hit 48mph, I thought **** it lets try for 50mph!, about 10 meters away I seen traffic lights round a corner and had to break hard!!, nearly skidded was scary!!

I found when I first started cycling, I was doing around 16mph average maybe abit under, but I greatly increased and within 3 or so months I was hitting 19-20mph average and up to 23mph average in TT's, I think that cycling with a club really boosts your speed especially if you cycle with them every week.

ChrisHK you will see that im rather stupid and dyslixic lol always fun tho

you fancy a pratice this Sunday afternoon?

well I hope i can get better and a bit quicker

RF, I'm off the bikes for a couple of weeks due to knee trouble, however when I get back on them (towards end of May), my free times are usually Saturday and Sunday mornings 6.00 am to 12 midday. I know this doesn't fit in with your partner's work patterns at present, but let me know when it does and we can do something.

You're going to say next that you don't get up before 11.00 am aren't you?

RF/ChrisKH - I might be interested in going out for a ride Saturday/Sunday mornings. I live in Shoebury and try to get out by 8am each morning (dependent on state of hangover).
I'm a newbie to cycling and av. c14-15mph on my Specialized Allez on a 20 mile loop.

What position on the bars do you put your hands on a 50mph decent? I havent got a problem going as fast as possible down a hill on my mountain bike (with disk brakes) but I have to say Im strugging to get used to a road bike going down hill. I have been experimenting and it seems the most powerful braking occurs when u have put ur hands in the drop position on the handlears. But I always feel unsteady when im in that position. Maybe I just need to get used to it?
