First ride on the bike I picked up today - a Trek 7.4 FX. Lovely bike and goes very well but I really really struggled after 10 miles on the supplied saddle.

I know that saddles are a very individual thing but has anyone a recommendation for a decent saddle for a fast hybrid bike with a relatively upright position? I have a Charge Spoon - is that more for road or is that worth a shot?

Secondly, towards the end of the ride my right foot was going numb as was my right hand as it felt that I was putting too much pressure on those points. Any suggestions as to amendments to setup that may remedy that? Too low/high//near to bars/not near enough?

Thanks in advance. Really enjoyed it and will be out again tomorrow.

Definitely try the charge spoon - have one on my Boardman hybrid and the road bikes and they are great

Another vote for trying the Spoon if you've already got one as so many people get on well with them (I think they're okay up to a point:dry: ). The numbness may be related to the current saddle not suiting you - pressure being put in the wrong places.

Thanks Phil. I'll muck around with the saddle fore/aft and height until I am comfy. Not sure what's causing the wrist numbness though.

Foot - have you got your cleats set up right?

Saddle - try the Spoon and if that doesn't work go get your bum bones measured (Spesh/Trek dealers) and get the right saddle.

Wrist - once you have your saddle set properly you may be ok - if not you can have a look at your reach etc. Maybe also look at bar ends so you can change position a little?

@Paulq Its your first ride and it'll take time to get use to things and pains are normal, if pains continue investigate/change things but dont rush into changing things on the basis of one ride

Not sure what's causing the wrist numbness though.

You may want to check the angle of the brake levers and shifters, especially if you have adjusted the saddle heigh, your wrists may be slightly twisted. Other than that, I would expect a certain amount of discomfort for a few rides / days until you settle in properly and get comfortable and relaxed on the new bike.

Patience is a virtue, so they say..
With the saddle, wait until your sit bones go to the shape of your saddle, or your saddle goes to the shape of your sit bones. It may be a bit sore for a while, but a 100 or so will be a good judge of comfort.

When i first saw the Charge Spoon, I thought it should be called a Charge Knife, But much to my surprise I found it so comfy, most others I have tried have left me feeling a tad numb after 60 or so miles, but the Spoon gives me no problems, however what suits one person may not suit another. if you have one best to try it for a week or so, and play around with the adjustment to hone it to suit yourself
