Hi everyone
I went on my first ride tonight with my brother.
We went off road in a place called the Wirral Way, its an old disused railway line, very beautiful place to ride.

We were riding to a destination about 3 miles, as it was my first ride we didnt want to go too far or ride too fast.

Getting to our destination was great, I really enjoyed the ride.
Stopped at an old railway station, had a drink of water and a look round.

15 minutes later we set off for home but about 5 minutes into our return journey I suddenly got EXTREMELY hot and felt as if I was going to be sick. I stopped and got off the bike and sat on a bench for a few minutes and the sickness subsided.

This happenned 4 times on the journey home and althought I still enjoyed the ride this feeling sick worried me.

I had a new sweatshirt on and I didnt put a tee shirt on underneath so couldnt take the sweatshirt off and I was BOILING hot, the sweatshirt was very thick.

Tomorrow night I am supposed to be doing the exact same bike ride with a cycle club and my brother wont be there, I dont want to be feeling sick in front of strangers!!!

Do you think I did too much for my first ride in 10 yrs?

Any advice would be gratefully followed - thanks guys xxx

Maybe you rode too fast and maybe you were overdressed.

It's not possible to make pronouncements on the internet that only your doctor can make.

You haven't given much information ... such as are you active otherwise, or did you get on a bike after 10 years of inactivity?

I'd take a couple of days off before you do the same again. They key to getting in shape is moderation, consistency and enough rest to allow the body to adapt.

Good luck and welcome.

As Randochap says medical diagnosis are best left to the professionals.

A rule of thumb would say that

1/ You should wear high wick clothing; in layers

2/ Ensure you drink plenty of water during the ride and also that you have enough food in your system.

3/ Enjoy the ride.

Only you know how you feel today and so only you can make the call about the club ride. If you do decide to do it - please ensure that you ride at your pace though.

if it's your first ride with the club, make sure someone will be riding with you who knows the way. this should be the job of the leader.

it sounds as though you may have not had enough food in the tank. you'd be amazed how many calories cycling can burn. make sure you take enough drink (isotonic is good) and maybe some flapjack squares or similar to nibble on your way around.

good luck and enjoy your cycling.

Provided you've no underlying medical conditions then it could be any of the things mentioned and just not being used to excercise on a bike. Might be an idea to miss tonights ride and get a few more practise sessions in? That might sound disappointing but they ride every week don't they so you can go next time and in the meantime do a few more rides to get the feel of things.

I'm glad you are enjoying your riding so much but whether you go and see a medic or not I would miss the club run as a precaution. Get in another ride later in the week before the next one and maybe go on that. You have the whole summer ahead of you so whilst it's annoying there's plenty more to come and it's better to do things right.

I'm sorry but she only rode 3 miles at a leisurely pace. Liquid/food consumption and clothing can hardly make an impact. I don't think anyone taking rides of this nature - short, leisure rides for excercise - should be drinking isotonics and eating flapjacks, especially if the rider is wanting to burn Calories. And a single layer, however thick, should not be casuing over-heating in this timescale.

This has to be down to physical condition.

My advice is that you see a Doctor and explain that you would like to start riding again for excercise reasons but on your first ride you didn't feel too good. The doctor may want to take you blood pressure and consider other health issues that are pertinent to your individual circumstances.

But its important not to give up, but to take it easy. Cycling is fantastic way to get about, but if it harms you in the process its of little benefit. Take advice and get the right help you to get your wheel-sprit back.

Hi
Thank you for all your replies.

I have definately got a stomach bug :sad:;)

I had my grandchildren at the weekend and they are now off school with exactly the same thing as me.

I suppose its the downside of grandchildren , they are always passing on their bugs!! lol

I will miss tonights ride, bum is so sore anyway haha. I will go on a short ride later in the week and see how I go.

But someone said about eating, I didnt eat before I rode, I thought it was better to eat afterwards?

I will know for next time to eat about an hour before my ride.

As for my fitness, or lack of it! For years I did no exercise but in Jan this year I went on a strict diet, so far I have lost 65lbs and everyday I do some form of exercise, rowing machine, tradmill etc, I dont have an exercise bike but my brother has one I could use.

Thanks guys xxx

Make sure you are wearing layers too - as you usually heat up as you cycle and have to remove some. Hope you are feeling better soon.

Well I didn't say remove all layers... but if it helps the picture... in the middle of winter I could be wearing under-garments:blush:, vest, base layer, next layer, merino zip up, and a coat and scarf and buff and upto 3 pairs of gloves!!! (And a pannier to put it all in if I warm up slightly)

Come the summer - strappy top and shorts ;), maybe with one other layer to put on if its chilly?

I was thinking on my next time out I would wear the same cycle shorts cos I love them, they are so comfy. I will wear a little strappy top and a thin zip up cardigan to take off or put on as I want

But I will definately eat too lol What a loon I am!!!

I'm not sure you have to eat a great deal on a 6 mile cycle (unless it's extremely hilly) but do take water with you. The first few rides may be tough but you will improve (possibly very rapidly). I'd agree with jimboalee and what others have said elsewhere about the risk of overeating when people start out as people can feel really rough before their body has adapted and think they should be consuming vast numbers of calories.

Hi Marinyork

I had my breakfast yesterday and nothing else, I skipped lunch and thought I would just get my dinner after my bike ride.

Thinking about it now I know it was not the thing to do cos too many hours had passed between eating, then the ride itself.

I did take water with me and did drink some.

The diet I have followed since Jan is called Lipotrim and my body is in ketosis so I really really should have had one of my meals before going out on my bike.

A lesson learnt!!;):blush::blush:
