"Aha", I said to myself. "Let this be a warning. [...] I will need to take extra care there".
Exactly what I was saying to myself last time I came off. We should listen to ourselves a bit more.

If the thermometer is below zero, or below 2 with ground that was wet, I'll walk with spiky sticks if I can't use the studded tyres or a tricycle. I've done the ice skating bike too much and don't bounce like I used to. Glad you're unhurt. How's the bike? Not even a scuff? Must have been very icy.

I work at night, and sometimes it is fine when I set off in the evening (cool and dry, say) but by morning the weather has changed (icy and wet). It's hard to predict, as the weather seems to change more overnight than through the course of a day. These were quite odd conditions - roads were perfectly dry, but wherever water had pooled or flowed it was solid ice. Quite tricky after dark. I haven't been over the bike with a magnifying glass, but not a scratch that I can see. My sandwich box in the right pannier saved the rear mech, and the mirror on the bar end took the worst. Not a mark on that either - Mirrycle, very impressed.

Live & learn.... glad you and the bike are OK. Maybe next winter the route will be less icy.

Thank you. Yes, I don't fancy ice very much any more. Cold is fine, wet is fine, but the two together ... and I have a car with a heater and a CD player

True, although in this case I had made the mental note to be careful. If that lorry hadn't been there, I would either have been going a bit quicker and crashed worse, or seen the ice and not crashed at all. No way of telling. I do listen to myself, but as I generally spout rubbish I tend to ignore most of it.
