One of the more amusing side of clipless, is when you are on an audax ride with LOADS of other bikers similarily equipped and you get to all get to a junction at the same time; all take off at the same time and the sound of all those shoes clipping back in within a few seconds takes me back to the lmg firing range - !

I've had a few close encounters when I only just unclipped in time. Only real clipless moment came when I lost 1 bolt from 2 bolt SPD cleat. Luckily I could gently roll onto grass bank. Had to take shoe off then remove cleat from shoe to get home.
Bolts are now held in with threadlock

Same here. I just finished my ride with one foot permanently attached. Made having a wee interesting.

Easier pedals (such as rubber blocks) are available. Are the very marginal benefits of clipless worth the less marginal risk of injury?

IMO, yes.

For about the millionth time (from umpteen different people) on here:

Just buy multi-release (SH56) cleats and you'll have no more clipless moments.

Great forever or simply great as a transitioning cleat for beginners to the standard SH51's.

I've never had a clip less moment.
Practised loads before venturing out with my pedals on the lowest tension.
Plus used to ride my "racer" with toe clips and straps  (early 80's) if anyone can handle them, clip less pedals are a scoosh :okay:
:bicycle:

My first outing with clipless, I was negotiating some roadworks. Forgot I had clipless on and went bike and arse into a big hole taking the plastic safety guard in with me!. Cut shoulder and hand, but more importantly a seriously bruised ego  luckily it was 7am on a Sunday morning and nobody saw! Since then I remember that moment every single time I unclip ^_^

Never had a clueless moment despite racing cross the day after I fitted them.
