does this mean its just sugar Im needing while cycling?

Basically, yes. You don't need "nutrition" during a ride, you need "fuel".

My experience of gels is that most of them taste revolting but the Torq ones are reasonably palatable. I usually carry one or two for emergency rations on long rides - I find them a useful quick energy hit if I hit the wall, like you did. But as mentioned by others, jelly babies do much the same job and taste much nicer.

wouldn't filling my water bottle with some coke or pepsi do the same thing but without having to carry around stuff?

I wouldn't recommend Coke in your bidon (too sticky) but you do occasionally see the pros drinking cans of Coke during races, so there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. Personally, I can't take fizzy drinks during rides - they make me feel ill.

I tend to prefer plain water in my bidon but if you really don't want to carry extra stuff around in your pockets, you can get energy powders to add to water, as others have mentioned. But you can achieve much the same effect with orange squash or Ribena. A 50:50 mix of pure orange juice and water is another good option.

Just don't get sucked into the "you need to buy this energy gel" train of thought. I'm not saying don't buy them. If they work for you you then go for it. Everybody is different and there are many different ways of fuelling for a 50 miler. Try a few of them and then stick with what works for you.

This is spot on. Energy gels are just maltodextrin (a form of glucose) plus flavourings, though some also have extra stuff in them like caffeine or electrolytes. So there's no nutritional advantage to an energy gel over jelly babies or a can of Coke. They're just sugar in a convenient form for consumption while on the move. As already mentioned, I find the Torq ones OK, but other people prefer other brands... there is no right answer.

I've never eaten on a ride and I do 40-60 miles most days. In fact I rarely eat before a ride, so empty stomach for me usually. I've never felt hungry during a ride. I've never bonked and I push myself hard most days, unless commuting. I'm not saying I would not perform better eating beforehand but I'd much rather eat my daily calories post ride once I've earned them!

Difference is you're accustomed to it. The OP would probably get in all sorts of trouble if he tried to emulate you.

I often do a 20 mile ride first thing in the morning as part of my commute, pushing quite hard, and I don't eat anything until afterwards, but again, I'm used to it.

No argument from me.

What works for one individual may not work for another.

I do however think some cyclists worry unnecessarily about their food intake prior to their ride. I'm not aiming this at the OP though but speaking in general about the amount of discussion this provokes.

That is 110% correct!

There are no bragging rights with regards to what you do or don't eat, it's very personal!

I tried changing what I eat prior but just went back to what I usually do, and that is what I feel like each morning, cereals, toast, eggs. Nothing worse than having to face something you don't fancy.

I take isotonic drinks with me and ordinary cereal bars and/or cake bars etc. Longer rides I'll have a coffee stop and toast, again whatever I feel like.

Never tried gels and stuff during a ride, I only do maximum of 130km at a time and never felt the need as they won't make me go faster, but I am going to test them out.

Fizzy drinks in cycle bottles...
I've done this on hot days when I need a top-up, and the only thing available with some sugar in it is lemonade or similar.
After bobbing along in your drink bottle a bit, when you put the nozzle in your mouth and pull it with your teeth, a high pressure jet of gas hits the back of your throat. Very off-putting if you are not expecting it (and usually even if you are expecting it!).
