Well done on doing 40 miles, I was a bit like you when I did my 1st 40 mile ride, my legs had gone for the last few miles, so it was a slow ride home:sad:

Well done. My longest non-stop is about 26 miles but in a couple of weeks am trying for 79 miles...It's going to be a challenge but should be worth it!

Well done on your 40!
Every time I've done a 'first xx miles' I've found it a sweat at the end, but the next time I repeat the distance it seems easier to me. I think it might be a mental prep thing, as in "This time I know I can do it".
The next time I do a 40 or more I'll have a fluids bottle with me, and probably a banana or two. I also like to have a packet of wine gums (can't stand jelly babies!) or something of that ilk as a little treat for when I get over this next hill, or clock up 20 or whatever milestone seems to fit the moment.

No, I take energy drink with me .
I really need to think about what I take with me

There is a good article in Cycling Weekly this week about nutrition now that we are approaching winter. It recommends that for rides of between 2 and 4 hours that you eat something within the first hour and keep nibbling every 20-30 minutes just to maintain blood sugar levels. It mentions stuff like bananas, oaty cereal bars or flapjacks. This part of the article was written in relation to warding off infection post-exercise but its maybe worth a try and may just help in the last part of your ride.

Good luck anyway

well done on your first 40 miles. If I may give you some advice, don't let your mileage be an obcession. Just enjoy your cycling, no matter how far you go or how long you ride. Congrats again.

26 to 79 miles is a big step and you may sufferto finish it. Like Stu said, do a 50 first to see how you cope. Good luck anyway.

Dave, are you scared of me? Every time I get within spitting distance you get out there and set a new milestone!

That's seriously good going mate, from 30 to 40 miles in three weeks. I hope I can progress as fast!

Well done - it does get easier!
I have increased my non stop distance to 30 miles - by planning a route with no cafes!!!!
With cafe stops, I can top 100 in a day quite easily..... fueled by cake and caffeine. ( but I think I come back weighing more than I did before the ride!)
Have been off cycling for nearly a month now due to shoulder probs.....but decided today that I need to MTFU and get back on the bike next weekend and ignore the pain. (Doctor has told me that I will do more harm not using my arms than using them)

I can't believe how easy the longer rides (30 miles) have become. Did my first 40 miler last week and did 31 miles today without really feeling it. If it wasn't for the hail and general storms in Swansea this afternoon I would have done more.

I love riding in the rain but it got a bit too much even for me. Planning another 30 in the morning before hopefully going for a 50 next weekend.

Well done on the 40.
