Ok, had the hybrid bike since mid July and today completed my first 30 mile (having previously using 7.4 mile loop as training loop and a 15.4 mile loop on a Sunday.

Points I noticed: -

  1. Legs went at 18 miles either due to lack of liquid or sugar, not sure which yet.
  2. Need more than 600ml in water as had to stop in village at 22 miles for more liquid (pint of milk)
  3. Over all pace ( 20.5st and 35lb hybrid) was 11mph overall (time 2hr43,45), so 1.5mph behind training loops distance
  4. Bottom was very sensitive coming off the bike (well padded saddle and normal - non-biking shorts) but has eased up a fair bit now.
  5. Need to alter bike set-up to bring handle bars back a bit (about 1/2 inch i reckon) as distance showed, I was leaning too much on my hands.
  6. Went for distance rather than speed but legs are completely knackered, so just going to do a training loop tomorrow at a gentle pace.
Overall, enjoyed it as exploring a new route at the same time.

Well done. Sounds very similar to my first 30 miler just the other day. Didn't intend going as far so didn't have anything to eat and after a couple of hours could really have done with something. We live and learn. It is interesting to push that bit further and find out what you need to do differently the next time as regards bike set up, food, etc. I did another 22 this morning and it felt almost easy compared with the 30.

Brilliant going, it's nice to push yourself out isn't it? Don't be too hasty with the bars, probably half a cm at a time if at all. It might be better to work on your saddle instead so that you're not tipping forward? TBH, if you bring the bars back you may just end up adding even more pressure on your wrists.

You posted this just because I'd put up about my 25 miler didn't you?

Serious though good work- hope your aches recover and you learn from your ride (that's why we're called beginners I suppose) :bravo:

One little tip about water and running out. Churchyards often have taps for people tending graves. Just run the water for a few seconds before topping up your bottle. Cheaper than the village shop!

I'll have to remember that one.
compo's post shows how amazing this place can be, even someone like me, with 40 plus years of cycling experience, can pick up something new, I had never thought of that one.

cheers all, noted about the water, never came across that before (but not spent a lot of time in churchyards to find out).

Cheers, Hadn't seen your post - but I have now, and that is a much better average speed than I managed, what bike do you have?

I have an old steel framed Raleigh Pioneer 501 Hybrid but I've recently been commuting on it which is 12 miles each way therefore building up quite a good fitness level.
