Having just got my Boardman bike on Thursday, today was the day to put it through its paces. That was until I got up this morning and saw the wind and the rain :rain:. Thankfully afternoon brought some sunshine and off i went.

Ive climbed a couple of roads quite easily where this time last week on my MTB my knees would have felt like they were exploding. No such pain today, and imagine my joy when at a point on the route last week a road bike went passed me as though I was standing still, today I was gliding effortlessly by while the guy on the MTB pedalled for all he was worth.

I haven't felt so exhilarated as I do now for a very long time, Im still coming down from the rush as I type.

Bring on tomorrow :cycle:

Good going and well done.

Welcome to the roadie gang . Amazing difference I changed from a hybrid to a roadie and that was a big step up . Watch the miles getting racked up next step first twenty then the sky the limits within a year I gone from 6 miles to doing a Imperial century (100 miles) Just keep riding the miles will come but most of all enjoy it

How do you know when you're ready to go from hybrid to road bike? I set myself a target number of miles, that I wouldn't upgrade until I'd done 30 miles in one trip. But is that the right thing to do?! Completely know where rjb70stoke is coming from when he talks about exploding knees! I'm up to a good 25 miles per ride, but is it still too soon to make the jump to a road bike?

Did another shorter ride on Sunday, just 7 miles this time, but each time I go out it seems to get easier. The short incline (only 30m elevation) that used to bust my knees is now ridden up with ease and no pain at all. I'd say if you are happy on the roads any time is a good time to get the road bike.

Ive still got the MTB for family rides but I can't see it getting used. Really didn't expect to get my new bike so soon after getting back in the saddle, but the deal I got for the Boardman was too good to not go for it now. So glad I did, it has really added to my enthusiasm for cycling, Im already looking at turbo trainers for the days when the weather aint so good.

Any time you like. There's no "making a jump" or "being ready". Back when I were a lad in the 70s and 80s road bikes were often the first and only bikes we had.

I rode my hybrid for six months averaging 200 miles a month I changed when I got the average up to 14 mph but could not get faster on longet rides . but there is no Right time it's when and if you want to certainly no distance barriers did rides of 60 + miles on the hybrid they just took longer than I can now do on the road bike

If you knew my families attitude to cycling you wouldn't say that ;). I remember somebody saying about a slippery slope when I used to go out and play golf. Amazingly by those kind of rules we are still together and very happy after 20 years of marriage.

I'd hang on to the MTB if I were you, even if it is only very occasionally - road bikes aren't the most comfortable for riding at slow speeds - depends how old your family are though - if we're talking about teenagers they'll probably be faster than most of us regardless of what we're riding!

What sort of hybrid do you have and what are you looking for from a road bike, there are many different types of each which can be ridden both on roads and to some extent off road

Depends on goals and expectations really

I've got a Raleigh Urban which I bought a few years ago as a "get me around in the summer to avoid using the car" bike (which never really happened....). I decided this Spring to start using it properly, and just love being out on a bike. Its quite at home off-road, to a certain degree - I took it all the way around the Rutland Water cycle tracks (23 miles) which are stony tracks and it was fine. It's OK on the roads too. The trip around Rutland made me realise I prefer on-road to off!! I would like to keep increasing the miles, and have in the back of my mind the public section of the Tour of Cambridgeshire as a goal....

Being "commuting" this week. Not sure commuting is the right word as I can leave the house and be at work in 2 minutes . However I have been taking the lonnnnnng way home to put a few miles in. So done about 6 miles each Monday and Tuesday. Today decided to test myself a little and take a more hilly route. Strava tells me the elevation gain was just over 300 feet, but I did take the long way round to get there. Whilst not a great "climb", Im well chuffed that I returned with no aching in my previously dodgy knees and the feeling that I could have gone and done quite a bit more, unfortunately the family wanted feeding (so did I).
