They're all fine for a road bike that isn't gonna be raced every weekend or anything like that. I've actually *got* the BeOne, and there aint anything wrong with it as far as I can see, and setting up a bike to your spec should be something you learn because it saves time and sometimes money...

Ebay is a good place to start, Gumtree and others are ok but Ebay does tend to have more frequent new additions, you just have to keep checking it as many bikes are sold in unofficial 'buy it now' deals soon after they are advertised.

I would strongly recommend trying the Specialized, if it is a tad over budget and you really like it then it would be worth waiting and save up for it, a lot of the motivation of going out on the bike will be down to how you like the feel of it and in many cases (whether people admit it or not) howthey like the look of the bike!

I tried the Trek 1.7 and thought it was great and excellent quality and deal, no doubt i would have been very happy, but I preferred the look and overall feel of the Allez and I am very happy I spent the extra £100!

I think i might bite the bullet and get a bit of finance and plump for the specialized.

I think that there are enough people, both on here and at work, who are very happy to recommend them.

I'll keep you posted!;)

I have a Trek 1.2 as a winter bike - it has the MASSIVE benefit of having space and fittings for mudguards .. I got mine in October and put my decent road bike away. I know you said practicality doesn't matter, but a mud spattered ride in Jan soon had me converted to mudguards. I am going on a triathlon training camp in March and will use the Trek as to be frank it is not much different to my £1400 Scott, and if it gets damaged in the plane, less of a loss.

Overall I am really pleased with it, and don't worry about the groupset it has. The gears work fine - not as bling as my Ultegra bike, but absolutely fine.

I only paid £400 plus the mudguards (black 08 model) so deals are there to be had
