Filming your rides

How many here film their rides, specifically road cycling because of close passes etc by motorists? I've been doing this for last few years as just got so fed up with nearly being taken out by idiots.
My hope is in time if enough do it, motorists will get message that endangering vunerable road users has consequences. Plus I cannot deny getting a bit of justice for someone who nearly wiped me out is good!.

I report rides through Operation Snap and I have to give them credit they take it seriously and 99% of my reports I've sent in have been actioned and in several cases gone to court resulting in big fines and points on licence.

I'm not a "Cycling Mikey" type, I never go looking for incidents etc to report, just any cars etc which overtake me far too close.

Do you think I could find someone to post the clip too? Not a chance with Argos, seems any complaints go directly to nowhere!! Couldn’t even get the logistics email.

The driver was frustrated as I could hear him shouting in his van. Probably because the local traffic was very heavy because the M25 was shut.

I do apply a modicum of discretion at times depnding upon situation. Sometimes reviewing footage back there is no question a vehicle overtook too close but not "that" close etc. A foot of clearance though is VERY close.

I have recorded all my rides with a camera fixed to the bike for about 8 years - I feel it gives me a right, or at least an opportunity to reply.

Depends where the incident occurs, if it is down in Northumberland then the police make it simple. just upload the video to their dash-cam portal and they are likely to send the driver 3 points LINK - if it is in Scotland though, much more difficult, police aren't interested.

The unexpected consequence of having a camera for me has been; Prior to having a camera a close pass could spoil the rest of my ride / even the rest of my day as I would be so annoyed about the injustice of the whole thing, now I say to myself, that's going to the police and they will get three points, that immediately cheers me up and then forget about it an enjoy the rest of my ride, and I mostly forget to take the matter further when I get home.

I do, but never save or even view the footage unless someone is a twit enough to deserve reporting. So far I'm 3 for 3, 3 reported, 3 charged, over the course of 14 years.

Certainly I'm not into Cycling Mikey levels of confrontation. Why risk a slap? He has had people do stuff like drive cars into him deliberately and then suffered the ignomony of them being found not guilty, so why bother?

In any case, revenge is a dish best served cold. Let them think they got away with it then imagine their faces when the NIP arrives. It's more fun being a smiling assassin.

Regarding Cycling Mikey, I'm afraid he's a bit of a prat. Probably started out with good intentions now is just a content maker. The way he seems to only ride a bike purely to go phone use spotting and then his attitude to them I'm amazed he hasn't been filled in.
He actually gives camera useage a bad name!

Your choice - but if this guy missed you (just) then the next person might not be so lucky

a quick word from his boss might just make him (probably him not her - lets face it!) might just make him more careful

Whilst drivers in vehicles should learn to manage their tempers and understand and follow that safe driving trumps everything else, I am also concerned that drivers are being push to make ever more deliveries in ever less time so the company itself has a responsibility.

In the past for some close passes I've contacted the company and refused to tell them the registration number and whilst it doesn't hold the driver to any account on one occasion with a courier I had a sympathetic depot manager who on discussing decided he needed to raise the issue at their next weekly driver meeting. Of course I have no ide aif he did but he was happy to discuss and not saying anything to get me off the line as quickly as possible.

I don't record rides (don't have such a camera) but I don't tell the companies but tell them that them addressing the issue would save me having to download and save data from recording devices, etc. (I'm talking about GPS showing I was at the same place same time as their driver but don't give details and they assume camera and I have recorded video).

Typically I ride with a Fly12 on the front and a Fly6 on the rear so everything gets recorded by default.

It’s rare that I feel the need to review footage and can only think of four instances in the past decade. One resulted in a driver having his taxi license revoked, one in a driver being charged with careless driving and the third in someone being charged with assault on my wife.

The only other occasion I have reviewed footage was when there was a two vehicle crash in front of me and I provided a copy of the video to both drivers.
