I've never understood why Americans call them fenders either. But then I don't understand a lot of things about many Americans...:rofl:

No, as I understand it, a flint catcher is a little scraping device that fits over the tyre at the back and pops out any embedded bits before they get a change to be rolled over again..

Just to confuse things, most Canadians call mudguards fenders and aluminium aluminum ... but we spell colour like this. And when I did, my American-designed browser spellcheck flagged it (and aluminium) with a red underline.

You probably notice all those "Zs" in place of "S" as well.

We Canucks are orthographic hybrids.
