Back up north
Road bike - make sure you keep changing hand positions.
Straight bars - consider bar ends so you can change hand-arm positions.

You will toughen up eventually, but the above will help in the short term.

You may not toughen up if it is wrong. You may just do lasting damage.

Thanks folks, sounds fairly common.
It's a road bike I have and I do change hand positions fairly regularly.
I've just started at the gym too, so hopefully will gain some core strength at the same time...
