Just got a letter from my car insurers, they've penalised me for entering the wrong date for an accident I had last year. This genuine typo has now cost me an extra £100. As if times weren't hard enough. I'll ring them tomorrow but I certainly don't hold out much hope of them being sympathetic. I wouldn't care I'm sure I entered the correct date in the original go compare website.
I wish I could just cycle everywhere ☹

Mine did that with the no claims bonus . I told them my last one was 8 years as so this year must be 9 . They carried on and insured me but then contacted me a month later saying i had entered the wrong details as no claims only goes to 8 years . I asked why the person that asked me the question didnt tell me that and they said they dont know but i was in the wrong . They then tried the roll over contract with me but went silly on the premium . Big bust up and i got my bank involved who took my money back .
Personally i would speak to the bank if you paid by DD . The company would have known the date of the accident but entered you into a contract knowing the false details making the contract void . You also have not given the bank permission to pay the extra amount of money they are asking for so i would wait for them to take it and then contact the bank .

They will use any excuse to try and catch you out. I once got two of my reg letters transposed, and they wanted £60 to correct it. I know it was my mistake , but even so!

Thanks for the replies, guess I'll just have to take it on the chin. My premium had gone up £200 anyway because I had to state I was at fault. I'm taking the other driver to court to try and prove otherwise. I'm usually pretty diligent. Double/triple check everything, just feel a bit down with it all.

I wouldn't take it on the chin . They are trying to get you to enter into a new contract and you dont have to agree to that .If they say do you want to cancel your old contract then reply that they have done that with the letter they sent you so you would like to see the terms of the new contract they have for you .
Remember , the person you speak too is not your mate , they want as much money out of you as they can get .

Fecking chancers the lot of em!
We've had some corking rows with insurance companies over the years. One year i got the renewal letter, best price yada yada, when i put our details into a well-known price comparison site, the same company was about £200 cheaper. When i phoned them to explain that I'd be cancelling, the operative tried to accuse me of fraud!

I did that too. The renewal had gone up by nearly £200. I got a much lower quote from a competitor, rang them up and asked if they could reconsider. They promptly dropped the renewal to less than the price I was already paying. Well worth the phone call.

Yep about right for insurance companies. It seem they have a license to print money. I have my premium increased for a no fault claim. Someone backed into my parked car in a gym car park and did a runner. I wasn't in it at the time, but witnesses and CCTV both caught him doing it and driving off. When contacted thorugh my insurance he denied even being in the car park. When confronted with evidence he eventually admitted it and their side covered all costs. However my premium was increased by 20-odd% next renewal. I queried this and was told that I am now considered I higher risk. So by their logic, because someone backs into my car when I'm not in it, it is more likely to happen again. I tried to explain random events and cause and effect, but they were having none of it.

You can, stop making excuses. (Not meant in condensing manner, rather a gentle nudge to show you the light :okay:)

My premium went up after an accident that that wasn't my fault, their reasoning was that statistically I was more likely to be involved in a fault accident in the next 12 months.

Anybody know where or how to find out the date and cost of a claim without calling the insurance company? It was a few years ago so can't remember the exact date and was never actually told the total cost, and don't want to be caught out like the op.

Direct Debits don't work that way. In signing one you're giving the other side "free access" to your account. To take what they like, when they like from it.

The accident was 19.10.16 I had it down as 1.9.16. Its fairly clear how I messed up.

I try my best we used to have two cars, unfortunately one week in four I cover duties which involves travel in mostly semi rural areas. I can't seem to manage more than two 36 mile round commutes per week. I' d love to find work closer to home, but not that close if you know what I mean.
