Sorry but I just put on a helmet and go out. West hills-east flat.

Most of the time I leave the house sans helmet and just go but other times when going somewhere unfamiliar its good to be able to plan the easiest/quietest/fastest/most picturesque route.
Looking at your 1978 AA road atlas doesn't give you any information other than how to get from A to B on major roads. Try using a route planner and you may discover new routes in the area you live which you didn't know existed.

Sans means without. Avec means with.

Another source of suggested rides is MapMyRide. If you look for routes you'll find a page that can be localised to your chosen location, and a cluster of routes that your fellow cyclists have created of various lengths, from shopping trip to expedition. The routes have the gradient profiles too.
