I think it comes from the bible in a phrase like:

'any creature thy cannot catch by hook or net will be classed as butchermeat, my son'.

Before I became a vegetarian I decided that I wanted to try out a few less common types of meat. Ostrich was excellent so that would get my vote. Of those on the list I suppose bacon would be the most obvious. However I've discovered halloumi cheese which although not a bacon substitute (I'm not really a fan of 'fake meat') somehow pushes similar buttons.
