I have to say I did my 1st ride in spd cleats yesterday and I was faster I also felt more in control of the bike. I do a hill training ride near me it's a steady fairly steep 5 mins ascent and the downhill is my recovery I tend to do lap after lap racing the GPS for an hour (good to see if you can get an extra 1/2 lap or so. I was approx 1 to 2 mph faster yesterday overall well when I remembered I could pull up and push down doh.

My average has been steadily increasing over the eight months I have had my road bike, started at 12mph now 14mph, lots of young lycra lads pass me I never try to keep up I'm 68 not 18! Have noticed though that as I approach a pretty member of the opposite sex my speed increases by about five mph! Now if I could place a young lady every mile of my ride I could probably break the sound barrier!!!!!

Ah sorry yes some explaining the local leisure centre runs bootcamps out on the grass at the front it involves tractor tyre flips, sledgehammers, battle ropes and chains, tyre runs, tyre squats and plenty of bear crawls in the mud it's much fun very dirty if its raining and it's a good mix of women to men and the local wildlife have discovered there are fit females wearing very little all, sweaty and muddy and some with muscles you wouldn't believe.

(Mmmm wonder why I do these classes )

Is there such a thing as a good average pace? I've got 16mph in my mind somehow, I think it's from a friend who said it's a good target to aim for. However he was also telling me cadence targets and some other stuff to concentrate on which kind of over complicated it really.

It depends on how you want to ride...
If you want to cycle with a club they may regard 16 - 17 mph as slow.
Tourers may be happier at 13 - 15mph.
For me, 16 mph (average) is about top speed...... but I can happily pedal at 12 -13 for a hundred.
Cadence is possibly important if you are working on technique and speed - for the rest of us mortals it is less important. Having said that, many cyclists do grind in too high (hard) a gear and would cycle faster and further with less strain on their knees and bikes if they chose a lower gear.
