Having read lots about riders falling at traffic lights etc while clipped in, and the struggles clipping in and out. Is there anyone who has never fallen because of being clipped in, never struggled with clipless and who have found clipless pedals a total success? Looking for some positives before I go ahead.

I've had a few close shaves, but not yet actually failed to unclip. I do have my pedals adjusted to the very lowest spring tension which helps.

One downside is I feel obliged to use the SPDs whenever possible so as not to get out of the habit of unclipping.

On the whole I would prefer traditional toe-clips & straps (which I did a few years ago do up too tight and topple over btw) but my main bike has a bit of toe overlap with the front wheel which is a lot less of a problem with SPDs than it is with toe-clips. Toe-clips on my folder work great.

I have had one or two near misses, but never fallen. I pretty much only clip in my right at the start of my ride and unclip at the end so I am a little less practiced at that side, whereas I always unclip my left when I stop (to stand on). If I am stopped and somehow lean right, it can be a hairy split second to get unclipped to avoid embarassment tho.

Start off with the loosest settings (if you can adjust them) and if you panic, you will be able to get your foot loose.

I did spend an evening sat on my bike practicing clipping and unclipping before attempting going out, and probably unclip my left way too early when I know I am likely to stop, or slow to a crawl.

I started off with double sided SPD's (which can be adjusted) and now have Egg Beaters (which can't). I haven't looked back since getting them. Not literally, obviously, that would be dangerous.

Been clipless for 4 years now and never had a problem. never struggled with it and never fallen off. I took to it like the proverbial duck to water.
Some people do, some people don't, some people need a lot of practice.

Guilty.

Fallen off at traffic lights
Fallen off avoiding a dog whilst riding slowly on the canal bank
Fallen off whilst on the mountain bike trail

Took me a while to get use to clipless pedals! Almost there though now - one year on!
Touch wood for my ride tomorrow!

Okay far too much like tempting fate but I've not had a problem yet.

Have had a couple of close shaves, including one where my sister riding in front of me forgot to unclip and went sideways, I was laughing so much the same thing almost happened to me!!

Karma!!

once so far, but I was dead tired and at the top of the last hill on the way home I slowed to a crawl and then kept slowing and just went over when I stopped. Never had an issue when not stupidly tired though

Rode cross and mountain bike for years with no problems. Bit like anything else do it often enough and you do not even think about it.

I had a few clipless moments when I first started wearing SPD's and then I had a few more clipless moments when I first started using SPD-SL's. Like all things it becomes easier with practice and soon becomes second nature.

It does become second nature but I do have a tendency to forget where I am sometimes and come very close!

I have also done the of at traffic lights, on a hill etc It grows with you

Yep! Seamless transition from toeclips and straps to spds, never had a problem of any kind

No problem here either in 2 years (fell off once while catching a hand rail with my foot as I mounted the bike half clipped in, but that dosen't count) .. become second nature in no time, you'll soon forget you're using them.

Tempting fate I know but never had a problem. When I first got my road bike I didn't put SPDs on for a month to make sure I was used to bike. I commute daily and never unclip my right leg (always lean to the left at junctions). Having experienced clipless pedals I could never return to anything else.

Yes and no, probably.

Had been using toe-clips since birth than decided to go for SPDs. Fell off a few times, obviously but now they are 2nd nature and heck knows how I got on without them..
