You could try what I always do and it works the same way every time........Unclip your right foot and as you do let your bike fall to the left thereby allowing you to use the whole of your left leg, hip arm and shoulder to take the impact on the kerb/verge.

I know what a helmet and shades are for now - a disguise

When I rode an upwrong, my saddle to pedal distance was set to 1.05x my inside leg length.
This ment that I couldn't touch the ground without sliding forwards off the saddle.
I just got used to it as its what I always did.

Now I ride a bent trike, I don't need to touch the ground when I stop.
But even now on my trike I like to ride towards/at the upper end of the recomended seat-pedal length for my leg length.
