My friend in the office has been always been a MTBer and she rides 17 miles each way as a commute on her full suss Trek. The other roadie in the office and I have been on at her to get a road bike and she has recently come into a bit of cash and she has gone a bit mental and bought a Pinarello!

Her spec list so far is:

PINARELLO PARIS FRAME FORK
FULCRUM ZERO WHEELS
SRAM RED LEVERS
SRAM RED BRAKES
SRAM RED FRONT MECH
SRAM RED REAR MECH
FSA CARBON LITE CHAINSET

Now I did plenty of research and know all of the specs and products relevant to my level of bike (Spesh Allez Elite) but this is a different league and I cant really help her or recommend any shoes, pedals extra bits as I specced my stuff out to suit my bike.

Anyone got any good recommendations on what she can add to this beast without lowering the spec level? The nearest Pinarello dealer is in london and she wants to buy online.

Better off with Super Record 11 then....

That spec is far too nice to commute on. What about guards eh....proper commuters have guards and lights...... you won't want that on a Paris frame.....

I would never commute on a bike like that.....I just wouldn't leave it locked up!

I guess she would use my best bike with isaac cardon frame and ultegra as a hack bike?

Can somebody please explain the concept of "too nice to commute on", because I don't agree with this at all.
It's a common misconception that commuting generally involves poorer quality roads, and that these will 'ruin' a nice bike.
Even if the stereotype that commuting is purely urban and 'a good ride' is rural, then (a) you get nice roads in cities and bad roads in the country, ( lots of cyclists live in the city and will ride out to the country for a ride, if the bike can't stand up to this then it's not exactly a particularly good bike after all then is it...
I agree it would be a travesty to get a bike like that and not 'put it through its paces' and spend a lot of time really enjoying riding it and riding it hard, and to ONLY commute on it for a low mileage *and nothing else* would be a bit of a waste, but this woman does 17 miles AND has entered sportives (was that mentioned in another thread?)
It's also a misconception that commuting generally involves low mileage - e.g. under 5 miles. This woman does 17 miles, which is quite a way.

Ha ha I agree with Bonj....:ohmy::ohmy:

She rides from Canterbury to Ashford and its nice surfaced country lanes and short stints on A roads and Like me her bike sits next to her desk. 34 miles a day 3-5 times a week is a fair distance and she has entered a couple of events already. I wouldnt spend that money now because I have kids and bills bla bla.. Emma has no kids, no mortgage and earns a fair wage and is very carefull with money ordinarily. To be fair she will probably put it through its paces more than most of us on here... her average speed over the last 350 miles (since new computer) on the full suspension MTB is around 18.8 mph and that includes soe off roading.

She just doesnt know much about parts, accessories etc hence the post.

seems fair enough, just you don't get much better in the way of bikes, maybe i'm just jealous then

she should get speedplays imo, for such a nice bike

o and ask her to join a club if she's going that fast, will definately help her riding ;)

This is indeed far from your typical urban commute. When I was younger and lived in Canterbury this used to form part of my weekend loop. If I would have a bike even a fraction as nice as Wigsie's collegue I'd be happy to use it everyday on that route.

Then she needs one of three things:

1) a sponsor to give her the bike in the first place; and/or
2) the same mini-engine for the new bike; and/or
3) a more accurately set up computer.
