The problem may be solved for the English when they realise they have a load of words with no vowels in them...

By, fly, pry, sky,my...etc etc

Y can act as either a vowel or consonant.

Ah, but we're a flexible bunch - we can deal with that! Who said words need a vowel, eh?!?

I will never forget, shortly after we moved to Pontypridd, in 1982, my mother was coming to visit, and phoned to ask for directions (no satnavs in those days).

So I say to her, up the A470, take the Pontypridd turn, then follow the signs towards Ynysybwl. "Can you spell that?" So I did, and her reaction was "but it's got no vowels!"
