I want to extend the life of my Gopro3, to record a timelapse, longer than the usual battery. There are a number of usb devices on the internet but I wanted to ask what results anyone had achieved. It is for cycling so weight is important, I want to record a ride of about 7hrs. What experiences have other people had ?

I take two batteries with me, small light and convenient.. Most of the after market options are substantially larger

Don't use a Go Pro as they're renowned for having the worst battery life of all the helmet cams that are worth buying.

Other than that, buy spare batteries and change on the go?

Even with the GoPro Hero3's Battery Bacpac add-on, you still won't get more than about 3 hours recording. As @sabian92 said, GoPro's approach has always been "pack on heaps of features at the expense of battery life". I have the Hero (original) and the Hero3 and the latter has shorter battery life!

Don't know what you are thinking weight wise but we have a powergorilla which we used on tour to charge anything from USB. It is excellent. There is a smaller version called a powermonkey which might meet your requirements. They are not exactly cheap, but they are stunningly good. Just google the names (without spaces) and you will find what I mean.
