Entries have just opened for next year's Exmoor Beauty ( the antidote to 'The Beast' ).
Last April's inaugural edition of 'The Beauty' proved really popular, with approaching 800 signing up for the ride through the Exmoor National Park.. However, truth be told, the event didn't quite match our original concept. We'd intended it to be a nice day out on the bike - a very doable, early season, leg stretching challenge. In reality, the route chosen was a bit too lumpy and a tad too long for the time of year. So, in order to address those issues, next April's event will start in Tiverton and the distance will be down to a 100 km. max. The new start will mean that the opening and closing sections - along the roads of the Exe Valley - will be relatively flat. The exact route, north of the Oakfordbridge / Bampton area is currently under consideration, so any suggestions from those with a good knowledge of Exmoor will definitely be considered. The location of the new H.Q. venue will knock about an hour off the previous journey, to get to the event's start and, with the start time window extended to 9:30 a. m., things should be much easier for those travelling from further afield. Therefore, overnight stays should not be necessary for the majority of participants. Early birds are already signed up and entries will be capped at 1500. Wow - I'm surprised that people thought the original route was 'a tad too long for the time of the year' - I'd be looking for something at least 200kms+ by April.

I don't know about pubs on the route Peteaud, but the map's just been put up on the event's website, which could help. In response to Wild Rover's posting above, while he may be up for 125 mile rides in April the vast majority of leisure cyclists are not. The clue to this event is in the name - The Exmoor Beauty. With 3 months still to go, well over 300 riders have already signed up for the ride, no doubt attracted by the idea that the experience should be an enjoyable challenge, rather than a gruelling test of endurance. The geographical spread of the entrants suggests that the location of the new H.Q. is also a big attraction. Tiverton is approximately an hour south of the M4/M5 interchange, which puts west London only about a further one and a half away, while the West Midlands is only about a couple of hours from the start.

Oh well, at least I'll be going slow enough to appreciate the scenery. :bicycle:

OK Ron, fair enough - it was me who misinterpreted the ethos behind the ride - maybe I was thinking about The Beast. Hope the event goes well and is a sell-out.

The only thing I would take issue with is the description of a 200kms ride - it could hardly be called a 'gruelling test of endurance' - that sort of description can put people off long-distance cycling such as Audaxes etc!

O.K. Wild Rover, point taken about my emotive language regarding a 125 mile ride being a 'gruelling test of endurance'. I wouldn't want to put anybody off riding Audaxes - or any other cycling disciplines; whatever floats your boat is fine with me.

So whats the difference between a Cycle Challenge & a Sportive ?
Or a 'Gruelling Test of Endurance' / Audax ?

One week on and, clearly, nobody has attempted to explain the difference between these various types of non competitive events. Anybody like to try and enlighten Spartak?
