Hydration issue - you don't need much food on the go for 50-60 miles. What did you drink ? If it was this weekend, and hot, you should be looking at a god 500ml before setting off and 500ml per hour riding at least.

Thanks for the replies, I'm understanding a bit more about it now. I plan on having a bike fit soon, will try foam rollers, and just knowing it can happen if I stay in one position too long will help. It's Tuesday night and it still twinges a bit when I stretch, so going up stairs or trying to walk fast. I was worried on the day it might lead to long term damage or effect.

Bananas are a problem for me, I'm allergic to them. I had been steadily increasing my banana intake over a couple of years and my body became intolerant, great huh!? Need to look up other sources of potassium.

Oh no, intollerent to nannas . argh.

I have a poor MPB - miles per banana, as like to eat loads....

Mike G - thanks for the links, will check them out.
fossyant - I had probably 500 ml before and over 1000 ml during, plus a gel. I don't think it was lack of water.

Good news is I managed a gentle-ish 40 minute commute this morning with no after effects!

Cycling uses a very specific set of large leg muscles but these are by no means ALL the muscles in the leg and the smaller supporters often get neglected and sometimes they protest. Go to an anatomy site and have a look at the muscled that support your hips (the hip joint is just where you say the problem is) and it may be worth doing some exercise to stretch and strengthen this area.

First proper ride yesterday - 3 of the 100 Climbs (sort of! came down Toys Hill and turned round about 500m too soon!) 65 miles 5000 ft of climbing no trace of the cramps from last week. First go on the foam roller today too now need to save for the bike fit!

Sounds very similar to an issue I've been having, I've been told it's lactate, still trying to find out how to minimise it, but it's bl00dy painful in both thighs especially when your 40 miles away from home
