And make sure they all go back....... I mean what sort of fool would spot one rolling around on the kitchen work surface whilst making coffee the next morning

When dealing with fiddly things like ball bearings - I like to work with an old sheet under the bike. When you have finished, fold the sheet inwards and pick it up holding all four corners - any bits that have nearly been lost will be visible in the bottom of the sheet.

When using loose bearings, all of the balls used in one race should come from the same packet.
If not, you risk damaging the cups & cones due to one bearing being a bit bigger and taking all of the load.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
When working with ball bearings don't be tempted by fine weather and work on the bike on the lawn - I mean, who would think of such a thing, and you can always find them with a magnet can't you ........ ?

always work in workshop i always have and always will and NO A MAGNET DOES NOT ALWAYS FIND THEM at least not when bazzillion iron filings are hanging about from previous metal work and you have loads of other metal stuff hanging about
in the future they will make a specific lost parts finder you just put into a touch screen display what part you are looking for and of what size it automatically locates all the ones within 10 metre radius of it and picks them up! great eh
Cheers Ed
now back to reality
