in replacing the 9 1/4" ball bearings each side of my rear hub i was wondering could i replace the loose ones with caged ones or sealed bearings? are there any advantages or disadvantages in doing this? and what grease should i use, lithium grease?

You'll not be able to use sealed bearings. You can use caged bearings, but I wouldn't bother. in the past I've had the odd spot of bother with the cage getting twisted.

General purpose lithium grease will be fine - get a big tub from a car accessories shop. It'll last ages and is a lot cheaper than a wee packet from a bike shop.

I've never had any problem with caged bearings. There is a school of thought tht says use loose bearings as you can fit one or two more than come in a cage.

when you think you've got enough grease in, put some more in.
