..a long way from somewhere called Home..
back into it after many, many years ..... ie read = ''not fit''

bought a Trek FX 7.2 for local country lanes .- with
Shimano M131 48/38/28
Shimano CS HG40 11-32 8speed - this is an MTB cassette i believe
11-13-15-18-21-24-28-32
i'm finding i just don't use the 11 nor the 32

[A]...would i be better off using closer ratios...?
Shimano Sora HG50 13-26 cassette
13-14-15-17-19-21-23-26

SunRace do a 12-28
12-13-15-17-19-21-24-28
but not sure about the name/quality.?

i understand i will have to buy a locknut-remover and a chain whip
existing chain - less than 100miles

...will the chain have to be shortened
i don't think so as the longer MTB mech already copes with 11-32 ...yes.?

[C] in general - is this the way to go - or a 42/34/24 crank ....More expensive/difficult..?

thanks for any advice....john

Unless you are unsettled by the large jumps between gears, I'd just run the current cassette until it wears out and re-evaluate then. Dropping the chainring sizes would be counterproductive as it would lower the gearing, so I'd stay away from that.

You shouldn't need to shorten your chain, though it might help with gear changes. As you say, you already have a set up that can handle 28-11 to 48-32 so gears in the middle shouldn't be a problem.

As for Suntour cassettes. I've not used them myself so I can't comment. I will, however suggest looking at SRAM cassettes as well as the shimano ones.

Unless you are unsettled by the large jumps between gears, .... felt i was always too high or too low as the hill steepened

Dropping the chainring sizes would be counterproductive .........understood

.... so gears in the middle shouldn't be a problem....ok

... suggest looking at SRAM cassettes....SRAM PG850 do a 12-26.....
