Absolutely. I've just been reviewing a book for Velo Vision, (lovely, glossy photo book), and there was one a bit like the OP, from when suspension was just taking off, and they pointed out, it was just one way to do suspension, and it didn't happen to be the one that ended up being adopted widely. There are lots of things that are only the way they are because that happened to be the one that caught on.

Bikes are a bit more complex than the structures I test TBH. I'm normally dealing with cylinders and flat panels.
