Came home today and was annoyed that the chain was rubbing on the derailleur , 5 min job tops I though, just a quick adjustment. 30 mins later realised I had no idea how I got to the stage that nothing now worked and that I couldn't change on any ring other than granny.

30 mins later all back and working after adjusting cable that I never loosened to start with ! so how does that work.

Well I say fixed the end of the cable now hits the pedal when it goes round but leaving that for another day or when the bike is due to go back to the lbs for a check up.

I've been there, madguern.

I decided that my gears could do with an adjustment or several. This was about an hour before I was due at work, and with no previous experience of 'tinkering' as such. Cut to 45 minutes later and I'm trying desperately to fix my gears which, before I started, could have passed as acceptable for the time being. In the end I got the middle ring working and half of the rear.

It takes some practice to be able to faff about with things and not end up in a worse state than you started, just keep at it and note what you do wrong and right each time.

And it's always best not to start an important job before you're due at work

NEVER start any DIY job on a Saturday afternoon; by then it's too late to get help or spares.

Once upon a time, my dad started rewiring the house. He chiselled out channels in all the walls, installed some of the wiring and then had to do a lot of overtime for a few months and so didn't have the spare time to work on the job.

My mum started getting really upset about having great chunks of wall missing, with cables hanging down and eventually my folks had one of their very few rows about it.

After that, it was a taboo subject. Dad never got back to work on the job and so it stayed like that, unfinished, for over a decade!

Eventually, my parents had another row and this time an electrician was sent for and the job was completed in a couple of days!

Been doing extra hours at work for last few weeks... House & garden have got a bit negelected, so todays jobs, give the lawn a 'quick' mow, while my bubbas tidy up all the toys from the living & dining rooms, then i'll have a 'quick' whizz round with the hoover.. Of course my bubs don't like the tidy up game - But they do like cycling & trampolining - So the incentive was as soon as they had tidied up we could ride over to the leisure centre for their weekly trampolining club, then a nice cycle home along the beach path, stopping for ice creams..
I started my chores at 11am....the lawn is mowed, the bathrooms are done, the kitchen is done, everything has disapeared out the dining room - The living room however resembles a bombsite & trampoling starts in 40 mins (it's a 30 min ride there) Of course i've done the StrictMummy thing & told them we are going nowhere till they have tidied it all away properly...
I so wish i'd never strated the housework & we'd just got on our bikes at 11am!

glad not alone on this, housework is always a good one. I have the mother in law coming next week so we have to tidy up house. But with two children by the time you finish you need to start again.

Maybe will just go and tinker with bike for a few mins :-)

.

My real one is "Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow".

When I was working, in the good old days when there was overtime and night shift allowances I soon learnt that two extra half shifts and a full week of nights paid for most jobs that the expert could do very quickly but would take me days of frustration.

(funnymummy - I can't read your posts, the colour is too much for my brain! )
Sorry - Just had the same commnet elsewhere - I'm dyslexic, I can't read black print on a white background, I used to have a laminate screen on my monitor but son #3 decided it would make pretty shapes cut up!
Have ordered a new one waiting for delivery, When redaing posts I have to scroll accross to highlight the background so I can read them, it's esaier for me to write to write in a pink shade as I can read it clearly.
Would a different font make it easier?
