I've just got back into cycling and am really a 'newbie' when it comes to understanding the basics - last time I tried to fix a bike it was a disaster!

I noticed that Evans stores hold regular maintenance workshops, they're free to attend, and they cover the key points for day to day maintenance on your bike. You pay a tenner deposit to book your place and the refund it to you on the night or you can spend it in the store.

I went to one last night and have to say it was excellent, I learned a lot in two hours and as you bring your own bike with you, you benefit from having some basic checks done (great for me as I bought s/h and really didn't know what I was buying, just that it all seemed OK).

They covered brakes, gears, punctures/tyres, chains, cleaning and lubrication and any particular points you wanted to ask about. The guys running our workshop couldn't be more helpful.

I was able to pick up some essential stuff for the bike, and a new saddle, with the benefit of all the advice on hand (and only 4 of us in the shop).

If you're near enough to an Evans store and need some guidance on basic maintenance, I can't recommend it enough. I'm not connected with Evans in any way, just a happy customer.

I noticed this and was thinking of taking my son along - he's a keen BMX rider and is starting to tinker with his bike.
Thanks for the info

I done one of these courses a couple of weeks ago@the Clapham branch and received 2 inner tubes, a multi lube and a fantastic multi tool , total goody bag worth £35. Not bad for a tenner eh ? Good course too ...

I did one before christmas. They are definitely worth it if you're not too confident about fixing your own bike.

Yeah, you pay a tenner deposit when you book the place, then they refund you on the night, or offer you a goody bag - I got an inner tube, tyre levers, puncture kit, water bottle and some vouchers for more money off stuff, about £15 quids worth (Clapham are very generous!).
