Well, an excellent and unexpected result for me, and apparently the Eurovision has also secured world peace for another year.
It was interesting to hear that should Australia win, they don't get to host the following years event. Apparently some sort of deal has been done to have a "neutral" host country within Europe if that ever happens.

Oh, and finally:
Madonna, nil points.

They usually do.

I think it's excellent entertainment, I really do.

The politics in the voting are laughable, though. In fact, it's part of the fun really.

Quite. Yet people criticise the UK for not taking the competition "seriously". What young artist with real talent and genuine prospects is going to get involved with this for Britain? They're guaranteed to lose and probably be humiliated into the bargain.

Plus, in recent times it spells the death sentence for their singing career. They are rarely heard of again.

I did sit through it for the first time in many years . I thought the Icelandic entry was particularly bad.

I said exactly that. They get good exposure for a couple of weeks plus a free 'jolley' to wherever but then its the kiss of death. I just hope they go into it with open eyes so are not upset when it happens.

It's not like that for everybody else, though.

The winning song last night has been a bit hit all over Europe, as have many of the other entries. This has been the case since time immemorial.

The UK chooses an unknown entry, unheard by the rest of Europe, performed by a little-known artist, and expects it to do well. It won't. It doesn't work like that.

If the UK took the same tack, the equivalent would be Adele entering with "Someone Like You" three months after it came out.

Mind you, these days the UK would still lose in those circumstances.

Funnily enough, I just heard James Arthur's new one on the radio, and it sounds just like half of the songs from last night.

Surely that is the point being made.
Its political. The UK could put anyone in and they would still be last or close to. I cant imagine Adele (or other big names) going there to be embarrassed.

The UK should just not bother entering next year. It's embarrassingly predictable.

I honestly felt sorry for that lad. The song was a bit formulaic but he sang it well enough and he shouldn't have finished dead last.

The UK could put Adele up to represent them next year, and they'd still come last. Europe hates us, quite justifiably.

I did notice that Russia didn't do quite as well as they might have. Perhaps the surrounding countries are less frightened of them turning the gas off.

Finally; just how crap was Madonna?
Oh god yes, Madonna was more cringeworthy than most of the contestants! Why do I keep watching this every year?

Well, yes and no.

There's a political element in there, which has hit the voting towards the UK, especially since the introduction of the 50/50 split between jury and public votes.

Even without that, however, the UK would lose because the contest isn't taken seriously.

My own take is that the UK don't want to be seen as taking it seriously, for whatever reason. Much easier to laugh at it all and say you didn't want to win it anyway. But to take it seriously and still not win? Well...

I reckon Eurovision is a hoot. Not my kind of hoot but one anyway. I fully admit that I don't get it: it's a kind of frivolous camp trash... to be taken with the 'right kind' of seriousness maybe. Whatever the "right kind" is.
