Well you missed a good one on Saturday RF and we returned home past your door at 1.00 am after clocking 100 miles + ;)

I'm not that far from you and you are sitting on some pretty good country lane rides in the Billericay, Brentwood and Hanningfield areas. Further east / north east towards Maldon, Tiptree and Mersea Island are some other nice rides and they don't have to be that long either. Just get a map and go explore.

Alternatively, if you get some free weekend time, keep an eye out on the informal rides section. Auntie Helen's rides have been well attended and not too fast either and they have all types turn up - all mad of course. But you do need to get a day off from the kids for those. Otherwise, let me know when you are free, even for a couple of hours and we might be able to meet up for a pootle. I have to look after the kids as well.

Rabbitfood, I'm pootly, not speedy (thus why I asked) - I average 12mph so am not going to break any records.

There are a lot of group rides going on in Essex it seems, at the moment, including Bromley Cyclists and YACF as well as CycleChat. For example, there's a YACF ride this Saturday from Marks Tey (west of Colchester, east of Kelvedon) which is 50 miles, p'raps a bit hilly but probably not too fast.

Most of my daily rides are off main roads and through the countryside but I'm a bit too far away from you, probably, although I did ride from Colchester to Thundersley a couple of weeks ago. Rayleigh is a horrendous hill after 40 miles!

RF, I'm just up the road from you in Rayleigh. I often head over your way and do a loop around Hanningfield reservoir and up to Great Baddow and back. Some lovely quiet lanes up there. PM me if you fancy it one sunday (I usually do a mixture of pootling and fast only on downhill bits ). The Essex Countryside ride on 17th May pretty much follows this route as well if you're interested.

I'm in Benfleet RF, but don't let that put you off. I can be in Wickford in half an hour or meet you nearby. Similarly Kablinsky - we could all get together, maybe one weekend?

Beware the man that is Aperitif. Go for a ride with him on a Saturday and you will be lucky to be home by Monday. Oh and I would just get you lost. Helen and Chris are your best bet they know the roads round your way.

And my knowledge stops at 1993 when I moved away from the Saafend area to South of The River (and now NE Essex). So although I know the roads down there generally, I've never really cycled them apart from passing through a couple of times. However, you're never lost with a Garmin (unless your name is Aperitif/Arallsopp!)
