Its probably just when I see the price of some gear you think at what I paid, it must be rubbish.

I agree that it doesn't feel like it and it certainly makes me smile when Im out on it.

Thrash it I will, assuming my legs can take the pace.

Cheers all, nice place this.

Enjoy

If you were happy with it before you joined the forum then you still should be. You really shoudnt let your appreciation of your bike be tarnished by the discovery that there are higher end products. I did this with photography thinking i was on a losing wicket from the outset because i didnt have the best possible equipment but in the end i was never going to be the royal photographer as i suspect you are not going to be the future lance armstrong so enjoy the bike you have - by what the other posters say it sounds like its fine.

Greatest ever BSO was a tesco's MTB i got once, i needed a commute bike and went out and got this all singing all dancing spring loaded steel frame jobby with disc brakes.
put the bike together following the instructions, basically pop on the wheel and pedals and straighten the handlebars
checked forks were the right way round cause this is tesco right?

took it out first time, pulled front brake.... at which point the disc unscrewed itself...

they'd only mounted the caliper on the wrong side.... i thought it odd that the front was on the right and the rear on the left, i double checked i hadn't been a total numpty. nope they'd mounted it on the wrong side so i'd naturally mounted the wheel that way.
back to tesco's it went lol.
i learned quick on that one...

honestly, buy what clothing is comfortable, if you don't want to wear a helmet hey thats kewl not everyone does, if you get use out of the bike it isn't a BSO but a cheap runner (like the hardtail i bought after the disc horror)
you've made no mistakes so far as i can see

I gotta admit when I first started the commute couple years back I went straight out and bought shorts/leggings/tops etc etc These days I'm more likely to be in a pair of baggies and a t-shirt as its just easier at the other end. Still wear the 'good stuff' when I go out on a long ride though.
