Can somebody answer this for me please? All my free energy saving lightbulbs say 25 watt, equivalent to 100 watt on them... Does that mean they willl be suitable for a lamp that takes a max of 40 based on the 25 or are they to strong based on the 100 equivalent??? (not very good with electrical stuff )

yes

The bulbs should be fine. The wattage limit is most likely to be based on the heat output from the bulb. Low energy bulbs run a lot cooler.

Yes they should work fine, but you might find they are too bright for a small lamp.

When I was in my teens I bought a set of spotlights for my bedroom. They were a lot duller than I thought they would be but my mother said 'Just put bigger bulbs in them, that 40W maximum doesn't mean anything'. Melted the fittings! :0(

25W equivalent to 100w means that the low energy 25 W bulb will give the same light as a conventional filament (old type) bulb rated at 100W.
The 25W low energy bulb will be OK in a 40W fitting.

(Many of us believe the equivalent claimed is perhaps a little optimistic.)

Carry on living in the past. You're about 5 years out of date. All of my energy savers slaughter filiaments. Some of the "bio" bulbs I'd say are actually too powerful.

Energy saving bulbs always were OK for light but the very early older ones emitted a dreadful dingy light for a minute or so before warming up. I've still got a few of those old ones but they've been sidelined now as electricity companies and supermarkets often give the newer, better ones away for next to nothing. I got lots of free bulbs from Sainsburys a bit back, Tesco did 5 for 40p a few weeks ago and my electricity company sent me 4 free bulbs.

The darkness of December has brought it home to me that low energy light bulbs mean that you have to be very good at finding your way round the house largely by feel.
