Empty D-Locks

I used to leave my New York D lock on the bike stand at work but that was in a securish metal cage in the back of their garage (shut at night) but I certainly wouldn't leave it in the open. Probably more urban myths but I've heard that an empty D'lock alerts the bike thief pr1ck to the fact that a bike is liable to be locked up there regularly and gives an idea of how long; that probably just me being paranoid. The other stories I've heard is that the lock can be sabotaged or worked on (especially if left exposed overnight) and the actual bike stolen faster. Or a rider finds the lock damaged and rather than getting a replacement wrongly assumes the bike will be ok for a period locked up with a cheap cable lock or even worse no lock!
