Wire wool not emery or any other abrasive paper/cloth. Use a bit of oil/parafin/wd40 with it and use a medium grade wool. That will get it pretty much as good as it will get but you can go on to use a metal/chrome polish on it if you really want to.

Thanks everyone for the advice and comments, I'll stick to what I have been using then, wire wool, wire brush, for the difficult nooks and crannies, wd40/gt85, Autosol and elbow grease. I somehow thought that emery cloth was going to be helpful.

The coca cola may sound daft but just try droping a dirty 2p in a glass for a couple of hours !!! my other tried method wire wool and metal polish I get some stuff called 151 metal polish on our local market around a £1 a tin so cheap as chips ! or if you can find some car body rubbing compound again this comes in different grits if they use that systembut this stuff is not cheap.A cheaper version is good old T-cut or a tube of Solvol Autosol you should get both of these at a car accesorie store ie Halfords (ok please don't through stones).

Yeah, I know about the cola, brown sauce also cleans too, something to do with one of the spices in it, I can't remember which one I think it might be tamarind.

Hi,

FWIW vinegar (or any other mild acid) is great for removing rust from small
parts, used it a lot for cleaning up small steel parts on guitars and the like.
It dissolves and removes the rust without affecting the patina of the part.

rgds, sreten.

It has nothing to do with spices, everything to do with acidic flavours.
