Think of it as two groups of gears, the left lever selects the group, the right selects the gear.

It doesn't really bother me because I am used to it - my hands just do what they are supposed to do without me having to think about it.

That can be dangerous if you hire a LHD bike though! I think footbrakes are always rear, or at least on any modern bike

I wondered about that. I might hire a bike next time I cycle abroad to avoid the hassle of taking my own. I think it wouldn't cost much more than the extra expense of taking a bike on an otherwise cheap flight.

I have never ridden a bike with a footbrake!
