Well for me personally it's all about cost, if it's to expensive then I won't be using it. I'm not that sad I've got to go out and kit my bike out with it just So I can brag I've got electronic shifting. I'll leave that to the twats with more money than sense with all the gear and no idea! When it comes down in price and my components need changing then I might consider it, or if I buy a new bike and it's fitted as standard then that's fair enough. But I certainly won't be parting with my hard earned cash on it yet.

I suspect it will be just like modern cars and motorcycles. Great whilst it lasts but when it does die and it will, it will be unfixable.Just like modern cars etc.

I do suspect that the cables won't be all that longlasting, well not enough to be significantly diffferent to Bowden cables. I mean a 5 minute lube once a year doesn't make up a overwhelming burden

I also reckon that the cabled versions are a bit mk 1 and it won't be until they are wireless that they will be really special.
Needless to say I would like a set once the Italians do it.

Cables?

Wires you mean, like the ones that have been carrying electricity round your house for half a century or more?

No use for tourers.

If it was powered off a dynamo, then it might be.

The whole point of electronic shifting is that it is not a replacement for cabled systems, but a faster and more efficient way of doing the job - in certain circumstances. It will be a boon to racing cyclists and an advantage to sporting leisure riders and clubmen etc, but won't be much use to long distance tourers, occassional cyclists who only ride on the odd sunny day or people who don't care about bikes and just want something they can neglect and leave lying in the garden overnight.

A decade from now a bike with a cabled system will be obsolete among racing cyclists, the same as down tube shifters are today.

Now't wrong with down tube shifters - only got STI on my MTB.

Advantage with STI is you can change down in a sprint or when out of the saddle on a climb, but there is no substitute for ensuring you are in the correct gear before you need it.
