On the topic of the various Germanic languages and dialects, I read somewhere that Plattdeutsch used to be more widely spoken than Hochdeutsch but that some time around the 15th century there was the mother of all battles and lots of people killed lots of other people (in various unpleasant and mediaeval ways, which was fashionable the time) with the result that Hochdeutsch became the dominant language in the regions that later became modern Germany (with the exception of the Southern weirdos that speak Bayerisch :laugh:).
