Hi there

I've got a Giant Defy 2 Road Bike. When I'm cycling over not very good roads (I mean tarmac which is all baubly and uneven) - there is a dull rattling noise from the bike. I've checked things over and everything looks firm and screwed together. Any ideas?

I don't think that's unusual with alu bikes? Vibration through the frame?

Could be several things:
  1. Cable outers hitting each other, e.g. the 2 gear cables at the front.
  2. Chain rattling as it vibrates up and down with the bumps.
  3. Yourself, as advancing age wreaks its inexorable damage.
I get similar from my touring bike, which I use for commuting, even though I keep it well-maintained. It's never completely silent, no matter how much effort I put into keeping it in good condition. (much the same for myself, more's the pity...)

I had an odd rattle this morning, it was the ice cubes in my bidon!

Sources of 'noises off' on my aluminium steed have been as follows:

Steady rhythmic clicking noise - Front derailleur cable end just touching my right shoe.
Rattly intermittent tapping noise - Ends of empty bottle cage tapping against each other.
Intermittent tapping noise - Front mudguard (CrudRacer) contacting brake caliper.
Rhythmic creaking - Inadequately greased bearings on new cartridge bottom bracket.
Occasional knocking noise - Frame mounted pump contacting frame on poorly surfaced roads.

There will be others. Chasing such noises down is just soooo much fun, even better than a visit to the tax office.

You could just do this:music:

Hi there folks
Thanks for all your replies – most helpful. Apologies for not getting back sooner.
I’ve discovered where the dull rattle metal sounding noise is coming from when I go over bumps or rough road surfaces – it seems to happen when the bike is on the smallest or second smallest cog at the back if this means anything.
Thanks again for all your advice and help.

Chain bouncing on the frame, are there any marks on the chainstay protector.
