Yeah course you can. There's only motorways thats off limits as far as i'm aware.

Totally legal, but as to whether they're safe....

A few in the NE have short sections of painted cycle route to try to get cyclists away from the main carriageway where high speed slip roads join, by getting you across the sliproad and rejoining the main carriageway at the end of the slip, rather than risking having hi speed cars travelling down either side of you.

Some dc s have no cycling signs on if not its legal. The A470 North of cardiff is one but further up the same road cycling is allowed.

On roads like that the slip roads are the dodgy places with drivers looking over their shoulder for a gap to accelerate into.

You get the odd usable one, I get less and less comfortable with the local ones due to the road side shrines to dead cyclists that pop up here and there.

It's a judgement call depending on the weight of traffic.

l this stretch of road is a b road (think its thle b808 glasgow to kirkintilloch road if anybody knows it)and it has an off ramp /slip road from the mway so people tend to come off the mway onto this road at a fair speed ,,its a 40 limit i think but nobody drives at 40,,i just wasnt sure about using it legally

You can cycle on any road apart from a Motorway or where it's sign posted, although saying that I won't cycle on any road with more than a 40mph limit but that's just due to my lack of fitness (and speed). I cycled around a roundabout with a 60 limit (Yes, I know, daft...) and it was bloody terrifying with HGVs and idiots in cars belting around it, so never again.

Yip, unless there a particular by law banning bikes, then it has to be signed like parts the A68, the A90 and the Edinburgh Bypass; there not roads many would want to cycle anyway. D/c's are funny some of them can be very intimidating to the cyclist but others aren't bad, in fact probably better than a single c/w as there's more opportunity for the driver to overtake before they become frustrated; its all a question of flow, speed etc.

In between here and there
I have to cycle on a motorway slip road every morning whilst looking over my right shoulder waiting for a gap in the cars going 50-60mph, has to be the worst cycle lane in Britain, if there is no break, the cycle track ends just as the slip road breaks in to two lanes.

The thing with dual carriageways is that I am not comfortable trying to hold a primary, so end up squeezed quite often

That can't be a real Motorway  No local authority would dare paint a cycle lane in to the confines of a motorway.

I ride 15 miles down a dual carriageway which is a main route to the M1 so is full of lorries and other vehicles passing at a lot more than the national speed limit and never had a problem, apart from the noise of course. If the idea worries you do some test rides down a small part of it and see how you feel

Do a couple on the A30 from Hook through to Hartley Wintney, Only problem I've had is getting up Star Hil at any speed with the DC narrowing at the steepest bit before you turn off to Eversley.

Depends on the duel carriage way. I have one i cycle daily which is a 40 limit but due to the traffic levels in the morning i can control the inside lane.
I've cycled on a few which are 50's just after motorway exits and those are the worst. People are still in motorway mode and are more than happy to do 100mph at only a few ft away from you.
