It was a poor attempt at a joke, obviously lost in translation. Cyclists as opposed to long jumpers type thing. It seemed vaguely humorous when I wrote it but I accept it just looks a bit crass now.

Yes. Athletes is now more or less a generic term for anyone in sports. I've even seen professional car drivers described as athletes. Even snooker players stress the amount of time they spend in the gym!

the golfer Colin Montgomery even referred to himself as an athlete once - which I thought was stretching the truth a little....

At the risk of lowering the tone, I find the idea that nobody has pinned a picture of Lance Armstrong onto a dart board and happily fired darts at it inconceivable.... getting athletes into darts, that's the real challenge.
Perhaps he's technically not an athlete any more though.
