So on the assumption I don't move home in the next decade will my original green licence remain valid ?
Assuming you don't blow your licence by getting a driving ban, I don't see why it won't remain valid.
I wish I had kept my paper licence as having now given up driving for extra pocket money, I don't need a photo card licence, but having got one I now need to renew every 10 years.

"Motorists must renew their photocard licence when it expires. If they fail to renew their licence they will be breaking the law and risk a fine of up to £1,000."

My plastic card license expired. I forgot and didn’t renew it for over 18 months, but no one seemed to care.
I eventually renewed it on line. They appear to cross reference your passport.

I imagine that if I had crashed during the 18 months my insurance would have been void which is worrying.

I still have my original green paper licence.

As I needed a tacho licence a few years ago they automatically also gave me a (free) 10 year driving licence.
(My understanding is normally you have to surrender the original green licence and then pay £10 to get a new photo ID/10 years licence)

So on the assumption I don't move home in the next decade will my original green licence remain valid ?
If you need a tacho card don't you also need a driver CPC? Just so you have to carry three cards.

What are you driving? If you don't mind me asking, I'm just curious.

Yes. Three cards. Driving licence (which is car, plus relevant hgv entitlement, lawnmower etc etc). Digital tachograph card and drivers CPC card.

If you are not carrying your CPC card when driving hgv, you're breaking the law.

My 37 year old son hasn't driven for 18 years since he lost most of his eyesight. He still has the licence because he looks very young and keeps getting asked for ID in pubs. Nobody ever queries the fact it is out of date.
