Or consider the subway 1 from (unfortunately) halfords. Would leave you with some extra cash for accessories, etc., do everything you need it for and comes in a women's specific frame as well.

Oh yes, agree, good call.

Okay bought a Subway 2. Problem already though  Here comes my technical knowledge (please don't laugh) whatever gear derailer (whatever they are called) is controlled by the left gear switch is really clunky and does not change gear easily. Should it be very smooth when the gears change? The right one is perfect?

Hmm - so does this happen when you change to a larger chainring (the big cogs at the front by the pedals) from a smaller one only or vice versa? Perhaps they didn't setup the front deraillieur correctly. Might just need a very small adjustment. I think the subway has only 2 chainrings at the front right?

Nice choice by the way

It sounds like you have some dirt in the cable outer which is washed in by riding in the wet or you just have some dirt on the mech. To solve this put some lube on the mech and test ride moving the mech loads of times if that dose not work then

1st, Get it in the biggest ring. Now change it to the smallest ring with out turning the wheel doing this will free up the cable.
2nd Unhook the cable from the frame so now you can move the outers up and down just rub some chain lube on the cable and put the outer back on the frame.
3rd take up the slack in the cable by changing gear (with out moving the wheel)
4th TEST

It was brand spanking new at 3.15 today. No worries. Took it back and it is all sorted. Thanks for all your help everyone! I am very happy. Not that I have been anywhere other than round our little car park
